Radiofrequency Ablation Q & A

What is radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment that uses bursts of radiofrequency energy to resolve varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Cardiac & Vascular Interventions of New Jersey offers this minimally invasive treatment in the office, and it requires little to no downtime.

When would I need radiofrequency ablation for a vein problem?

You might benefit from radiofrequency ablation if you’re experiencing difficult symptoms associated with varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency.

Some common problems include:

  • Prominent ropy or twisted veins
  • Leg pain
  • Leg cramps
  • Tired-feeling legs
  • Leg discoloration
  • Leg swelling
  • Itchy legs

If you’re suffering from these symptoms and want a solution that doesn’t require surgery, radiofrequency ablation could be the right choice.

How does radiofrequency ablation work?

You receive local anesthesia for comfort. After making a needle puncture, Dr. Zakir and his team typically uses ultrasound imaging guidance to confirm the ideal placement for the radiofrequency energy treatment.

Dr. Zakir and his team moves a slender catheter to the treatment area and then threads a tiny radiofrequency fiber through the catheter. With the fiber in your vein, they deliver bursts of radiofrequency energy.

Dr. Zakir and his team gradually move the catheter and fiber through your vein to treat the entire diseased vein. They place a small bandage over the needle puncture site, and you wear a compression stocking home after the procedure.

After treatment, your treated vein scars internally, and then withers and dies. The blood within the vein travels into healthy veins nearby, and your body gradually absorbs and eliminates the vein tissue during normal waste-removal processes.

How long does it take for my vein to close after radiofrequency ablation?

You have an ultrasound imaging appointment after your radiofrequency ablation, typically in the week after treatment. During this appointment, Dr. Zakir and his team confirms that your treated vein is closed.

Veins should close within a week, but it could take longer to see full results. You might need follow-up treatments, such as sclerotherapy, to treat other connected veins in some cases.
