Varithena Q & A
What is Varithena?
Varithena is a type of sclerotherapy, one of the most common treatments for varicose veins. Like all types of sclerotherapy, Varithena is injected into the targeted vein.
The medication makes the vein walls shrink or collapse. Before long, they turn into scar tissue that your body naturally removes, effectively eliminating your unsightly veins.
Varithena is specially formulated to turn into a foam just before it’s injected into the targeted vein.
Varithena’s ability to foam gives it a distinct advantage over fluid medications. The foam pushes blood out of the way so the medication isn’t diluted.
Additionally, the foam expands to reach all the vein walls.
What symptoms indicate I may need Varithena?
The obvious symptom caused by varicose veins is their appearance. Many people decide to treat the veins for purely cosmetic reasons.
You may also want to get rid of varicose veins because they cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Pain
- Heavy-feeling legs
- Edema (swelling due to fluids)
- Restless legs
- Itchiness
- Skin discoloration
- Muscle cramps
- Burning or throbbing
- Spontaneous bleeding
The underlying condition responsible for your varicose veins, called venous insufficiency, is a vascular disease that can lead to other problems. Discolored skin, eczema-like rashes, and nonhealing ulcers on your lower leg are all signs of advanced venous insufficiency.
What should I expect during my treatment with Varithena?
Using ultrasound to view the vein and guide the procedure, your provider inserts a narrow tube and slowly injects Varithena into the vein. After the entire vein is treated, they apply compression stockings and ask you to walk around for about 10 minutes.
You need to wear compression stockings for at least two weeks after your procedure. Some patients experience pain, discomfort, or tenderness, but these side effects go away within a week.
Depending on the size and extent of your varicose veins, you may need more than one treatment to eliminate all the veins. The doctor talk with you about your treatment plan before you decide to have sclerotherapy with Varithena.
